Frequently Asked Questions

What distinguishes cold process soap from synthetic soap?

Cold process soap is an artisanal creation, made through a method that harnesses the natural alchemy of oils and lye, resulting in a product that is both luxurious and nourishing. Unlike synthetic soaps, which often contain harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, cold process soap is imbued with the essence of nature, featuring wholesome ingredients such as shea butter, olive oil, and essential oils. This traditional technique allows for the preservation of the natural glycerin produced during saponification, a humectant that draws moisture to the skin, thereby enhancing hydration and promoting a gentle cleansing experience. The benefits of using cold process soap extend beyond mere indulgence; they encompass a holistic approach to skincare, offering nourishment that soothes and revitalizes the skin, making it an exquisite choice for those who seek both efficacy and elegance in their daily routine.

What ingredients are used in your handcrafted soaps?

Each bar is a harmonious blend of natural ingredients including rich shea butter, nourishing olive oil, and a selection of exquisite essential oils. These ingredients are thoughtfully chosen not only for their skin-loving properties but also for their ability to evoke a sensory experience.

What are the pros and cons of using essential oils?

Pros of essential oils in cold process soap

  • Naturally derived fragrance from plants, herbs and flowers, making them a natural alternative to synthetic fragrance oils.
  • Aromatherapeutic qualities
  • Biodegradable and environmentally conscious.
  • Customizable blends that allow for the creation of unique, natural scent profiles.

Cons of essential oils in cold process soap

  • Volatility of scent - essential oils can fade more quickly than fragrance oils due to their delicate and volatile nature.
  • Limited fragrance variety- Certain scent families ( such as sweet, fruity, or gourmand notes) are not available as essential oils.

My approach

While essential oils can be more challenging and costly to work with, I choose them for their purity, natural origin, and the subtle aromatherapy benefits they bring to each bar. They align with my commitment to creating soaps that are not only effective and gentle, but also thoughtfully made with ingredients you can feel good about.

Is Cold process soap tear free ?

Cold process soap by it's very nature, can not be classified as "tear-free." This is because it is created through a traditional saponification process in which natural oils and butters react with an alkali to form soap. The result is a cleaning bar with a naturally alkaline pH, which helps maintain it's gentle, skin-loving qualities but can cause eye irritation if it comes into direct contact with the eyes. Unlike synthetic detergents found in many commercial "tear-free" products, cold process soap does not contain additional chemical agents that neutralize this effect. For this reason, I recommend avoiding contact with the eyes and rinsing thoroughly with water if exposure occurs.

How should I store my soaps to maintain their quality?

To preserve the integrity and longevity of your handcrafted soaps, I recommend storing them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Allowing your soap to dry between uses will also enhance its lifespan, ensuring that each use is as indulgent as the first. Consider placing your soap on a well-draining soap dish to facilitate this process.
